Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and a wonderful Hungarian style city with lovely museums, art galleries and churches. The enormous main square, Trg Bana Jelacica, divides the town in an upper and a lower part with each its own atmosphere.

Old Town in Upper City

Gornji Grad is the upper and oldest town and built on two hills. It's a lovely area to wander through the twisting streets with cobblestones and explore the impressive buildings along your walk. Start your walk at the main square and follow your way to the big cathedral. This route will pass the town's main market. The cathedral was built for the first time in 1217 and rebuilt and added to since then. The twin towers and neo-Gothic front were added in the 1880s. Visit the stunning interior with a beautiful ornate masterpiece and the Ten Commandments written on the north wall in twelfth-century handwriting.

Lotrscak Tower's Views

St Mark's Church was built in the thirteenth century, also rebuilt in the 1880s and well known for the blue, white and red tiles on the roof. The pattern is in the colors of the district of Zagreb and the kingdoms of Dalmatia, Slavonia and Croatia. The Lotrscak Tower was part of the defense in the thirteenth-century when it warned the citizens of Zagreb of imminent attack. In remembrance of this important role every day at noon a canon is fired. Climb the tower for some impressive views over Zagreb.

Museums in the lower City

Donji Grad is the lower part of town and was built in the late nineteenth century. From upper town you can easily enter the lower town with the funicular railway. Explore the attractive squares around the beautiful gardens, the parks and the broad boulevards. Take a stroll through Medvednica Nature Park to escape from the hustle and bustle from the city. You'll find many museums here, especially worthwhile are the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters and the Mimara Museum.
